Outdoor Family Photos

in Lancaster, PA

Photographing these outdoor family photos with two brothers was a special experience, especially because of the big age gap between them. One is already a teenager, quiet and composed, while the other is still in the playful, curious stage of early childhood. Capturing moments between them felt like freezing time—watching the older one gently guide and tease his younger brother, who looked up to him with wide-eyed admiration. It wasn’t always easy to get them both to focus at the same time, but those candid moments—when the little one made his big brother laugh or when they simply held hands—ended up being the most meaningful. The contrast in their personalities and ages made the photos even more beautiful, telling a story of a bond that grows stronger despite the years between them.

A Serene Location

What made the session even more memorable was the location: Donegal Presbyterian Church in Mount Joy. The boys loved exploring its peaceful grounds, walking through the old stone paths and peeking into quiet corners. The church, with its timeless architecture, historic charm, and surrounding greenery, offered a perfect backdrop that added depth and warmth to every shot. I just have to share how beautiful it was—the light filtering through the trees, the texture of the weathered structures, and the serenity of the property made it feel like we were capturing not just memories, but a little piece of history too.

The Unique Water Feature is Perfect for Interesting Family Photos

One feature that truly stood out—and that I can’t stop talking about—was the unique water feature on the church grounds. It’s not something you expect to find at a church, and that’s exactly what made it so intriguing. I kept wondering how old it might be, and what the church uses it for—if it has any ceremonial significance, or if it’s just a beautifully preserved part of the landscape.

It added a magical element to the session. The reflections in the water, the way the boys naturally gravitated toward it in curiosity, and the quiet sound of water in the background—it brought a calm and grounding presence to the photos. It’s rare to find a spot so rich in character and history that also feels perfectly suited for capturing family moments. This little corner of Donegal Church, with its unexpected beauty, made the whole experience feel even more special and unique.

Accents of Stone & Well-Manicured Flower Beds

Another charming detail that made the Donegal Presbyterian Church so memorable was the stone path that winds gracefully in front of the building. Worn smooth by time, the path added a lovely, rustic touch to our photos, giving them a timeless, almost storybook feel. Lining the path were floral bushes in full bloom, their soft pinks and vibrant reds providing beautiful pops of color against the muted tones of the old stone. The roses brought a sense of life and softness to the historic setting, and the boys couldn’t resist stopping to admire (and sniff) them along the way. Just off the path, a rustic stone stairway led up towards the church entrance—its steps slightly uneven from age, adding even more character to the scene. It was the kind of place that feels untouched by time, and all of these elements—the path, the roses, the stone steps—came together to create a peaceful, picturesque setting that made our family photo session feel truly one of a kind.

A Peaceful Experience

One of the things I really appreciate about Donegal Presbyterian Church is the peaceful stillness that surrounds it. Tucked away in Mount Joy, the grounds feel almost like a hidden gem, far removed from the noise and rush of everyday life. During our session, the quiet was almost sacred, with only the sound of birds, and an occasional breeze through the trees. It created an atmosphere of calm that allowed the boys to relax and just be themselves, which made for some truly genuine and heartfelt moments.

For professional photography clients, this kind of setting is invaluable. The privacy the church grounds offer makes the experience feel exclusive and personal, like the space has been reserved just for you. There’s no foot traffic, no distractions—just beautiful, historic scenery and the freedom to move around and explore. Whether it’s for family portraits, engagements, or even quiet moments of reflection, Donegal Church provides a rare combination of serenity and charm that’s hard to find elsewhere.

Important Considerations for Photography

When planning a photo session at the Donegal Presbyterian Church, there are a few important details to keep in mind. First and foremost, it's essential to notify the church in advance to request permission and coordinate scheduling. While the grounds are peaceful and feel very private when services aren't in session, it is still an active place of worship with its own calendar of events, including services, weddings, and community gatherings. Reaching out ahead of time ensures that your session won’t conflict with any church activities and shows respect for the sacred nature of the space.

In my experience, the church staff were kind and accommodating, but they do appreciate advanced notice and clear communication about the date, time, and nature of the session. Being mindful of any upcoming events, and even checking for things like funerals or special services, helps maintain a good relationship with the church and ensures a smooth, uninterrupted photography experience. Overall, a little planning goes a long way in making the most of this serene location.

Evening is truly the best time to photograph at the Donegal Presbyterian Church. As the sun begins to set, a warm, golden light washes over the stonework and filters gently through the surrounding trees, creating a soft, flattering glow that enhances every image. The shadows grow longer, adding depth and texture to the scenery, while the peaceful atmosphere becomes even more serene. Spring and summer are especially ideal for sessions here—the rose bushes are in bloom, the trees are full and green, and the entire property feels alive with color and warmth. The combination of golden-hour light and the vibrant seasonal landscape makes for an unforgettable setting that brings out the very best this location has to offer.

I Will Be Back!

Photographing the two brothers as they explored the Donegal Presbyterian Church grounds was truly a joy. Watching them interact—playing, discovering little details, and simply enjoying each other’s company—made the session feel effortless and meaningful. The setting added so much to the experience, from the quiet charm of the stone path and rose bushes to the mysterious beauty of the water feature and the timeless architecture all around us. As I walked the grounds with my camera in hand, I couldn’t help but imagine future clients experiencing the same sense of wonder and calm. There’s something incredibly special about this place, and I look forward to seeing other families, couples, and individuals connect with it just as deeply as I did. It’s more than just a backdrop—it’s a space that invites storytelling, reflection, and connection, and I feel grateful to have discovered it through this beautiful session.
